Is the Internet the Path to the Future? By Majid Osman

The internet is for sure one way that leads us to the future. It is perhaps the best way that suggests we are moving forward, that we are going into the future. These suggestions have been based on the technologies, software and internet applications. These little things are making our lives better every single day. The introduction of instant messenger meant that we could talk to someone on the other side of the planet. This indicated that we were taking maybe the first step to the future using the internet.

That is only one aspect where the internet was being demonstrated as the path to the future. Other ways that this is shown, is that we use the internet now as our main source for literally almost anything. We use the internet to pay for bills, check our bank statements, look for information, and generate a billion dollars in sales revenue. That is almost everything we do on our daily basis, well maybe not for the last one, but the internet is expanding at lightening speed. Many and many users are starting to utilize the web for almost everything. Stats show that we were fitter a decade ago, and that we are still going into that direction.

So if everything is almost run via the internet, does that not mean that it is the path to the future? I don't know, but I do know that the internet is expanding every second, in the sense that websites are published every second, products and services are sold every minute, big company and country agreements are made via the internet.

James Bond's Secret Lair - The World's Coolest Data Center By Saleh Tousi Platinum Quality Author

Data centers have never been exciting places. That is, until now. Its official, the coolest data center in the world is the Pionen, located in 100 feet below the bedrock in Stockholm, Sweden. Originally built as a nuclear bunker used during wartimes, it's now the home of a space-age, Bond-worthy data center.

Instead of focusing on hardware and servers, the designers of this ultra high-tech data center decided to focus on humans, making it a hip and fun place to work. The center features greenhouses, waterfalls, German submarine engines, simulated daylight and it can withstand a direct hit from a hydrogen bomb.

Design Straight Out of the Movies

The location of the facility was the inspiration for the unique design. Building a data center in an old nuclear bunker demands something out of the ordinary and a boring design wouldn't do. To find inspiration for the center, the designers turned to science fiction movies like Logan's Run, Silent Running and Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. Additionally, the James Bond movies were a huge inspiration for the design. The designer even wanted to get a white cat, but realized that would be going a bit too far.

Word of Mouth Marketing

One of the hidden benefits for such an intriguing and interesting design is the word of mouth marketing it automatically produces. The space-age design, waterfalls, greenhouses, artificial sunlight and smoke machines make the data center stand out. Since collocation is one of the services they offer, customers frequently visit the facility. When something is this unique customers are sure to share what they saw with their friends and business associates. Something like that can't be ignored. Other companies will want to check it out and see what's so special about the center and voila, they have another customer.

Space-Age Features

But it's not just design and no substance. In fact the data center is just as high-tech as it is aesthetically pleasing.

• Located in a nuclear bunker- the data center is located at the site of an original nuclear bunker from the Cold War. It has also kept the original name: Pionen White Mountains

• Bomb Proof- located 100ft underground and in an original bomb shelter, no hydrogen bomb is going to destroy these servers. It was built to be secure and protect soldiers in case of an attack. No longer needed for these purposes, it now protects servers... even from a nuclear attack.

• Triple Redundancy Internet- Losing internet connection is not a concern in this facility. Even though it's located deep within the mountains, there are both fiber and copper wires running into the facility through the mountains from three different directions.

• Cooling- The facility uses Baltimore Aircoil fans to cool the facility to the effect of 1.5 megawatts. This is enough cooling to cool several hundred servers.

• Houses Sweden's largest ISP- this center is home to the NOC for all of Bahnhof's operations. This is the largest ISP in Sweden, with five locations- of which, Pionen is the biggest. Additionally the data center is a colocation facility so you can put your servers there if you want.

This data center is by far the world's coolest data center and deserves its title. It's tough competition for anyone to outdo Pionen, but if anyone is up to the challenge, the world could use more cool data centers.

Heat Rises - Re-Using the Heat Generated by Servers By Saleh Tousi

With the green movement getting more and more attention every day, data centers are starting to get more and more flack for the amount of power the use up and companies are looking for ways to start "greening up." Most of the initiatives that data facilities are taking involve recycling the power within the facility, using energy-efficient servers and cooling the server room more effectively. These efforts are great and lead to less wasted energy and a more efficient system.

But with all the attention focused on saving, little is being paid to making better use of the existing heat generated by the servers. As it stands, this heat gets wasted. It's removed from the facility by whatever cooling system the data center uses. Most commonly this is in the form of air conditioning or water cooling.

Missed Opportunity

But what if there was another way - what if the heat generated by the servers could be put to better use? There is. The solution lies in using the heat generated by the servers and putting toward something useful, rather than simply discarding it in the atmosphere.

Energy is wasted all the time these days. Companies spend thousands of dollars to remove the heat from their server room, while simultaneously spending more money to heat other parts of the building. This wasted heat is a missed opportunity in energy efficiency.

There are a few companies that have seen this opportunity and have taken the initiative to put the heat generated by servers to good use. There is no limit to the potential that this has when harnessed and used productively.

Heat Recirculation

One example of a company using the existing heat from the servers is Quebecor, a Canadian media company. Located in Winnipeg, where temperatures frequently reach 35 degrees below zero, Celsius in the winter. The company found that even during the coldest months of the year, they were spending thousands of dollars cooling their data center, despite the harshly cold temperatures outside. At the same time, they were spending just as much money heating up other parts of the building.

It just didn't make sense. Fortunately the regional director for the company saw this as an opportunity for the company to reuse the heat generated by the servers which helps save energy all around and at the same time reduces costs. So that's exactly what he did. Instead of merely cooling the server room, he implemented a system whereby the excess heat was harnessed and pumped into other parts of the building to provide heat.

The heat generated from the servers is used to heat the offices upstairs which host the Winnipeg Sun. Additional heat is allocated to the warehouse across the street which is often chilly due to the door opening and closing all day. Whatever heat is left over is put back outside.

Heating a Swimming Pool

Another company in Switzerland had a similar idea of putting heat generated by servers to good use. This company is located about 25-feet underground and 500 feet away from a swimming pool. Instead of wasting the heat generated by the servers, the company decided pump the heat into the nearby swimming pool in order to provide it with the necessary heat. Using custom-made cooling units overhead and powered by 200 servers, they are able to use the hot exhaust air to heat up the water and then filter it into the pool. This creates a practical use for the excess heat while simultaneously eliminating the need for the pool to use oil as its energy source.

Going Green(house)

The latest example of a data center putting their excess heat to good use is at the University of Notre Dame. Raising energy costs are forcing the local greenhouse to shut down. Currently it costs around $1,000 a day to heat the greenhouse, which politicians have decided is too much to ask taxpayers to pay.

That's where Notre Dame comes in. They've developed a new type of data center that's housed in a standard shipping container and placed right next to the greenhouse. The excess heat from the data center will be pumped into the greenhouse to heat it. This will reduce the costs of running the greenhouse enough so that it won't have to shut down.

As an added bonus, the data center will be able to use the humidity generated by the greenhouse in the fall, winter and spring. This reciprocal relationship benefits not only the greenhouse, but the servers as well.

Future of Heat

Reusing heat from data centers has many applications and lots of potential as an energy-saving initiative. Most companies aren't thinking along these lines though. But they should. Creating more efficient servers and cooling systems, reducing the amount of heat generated, and reusing the heat that is generated are all integral components of an energy-efficient data center. Companies have many options to choose from and reusing excess heat is yet another way they can help reduce the amount of waste produced in their facility.

Science has invented many things. The triumphs of science are too many to be counted. Some of the latest triumphs of science are really wonderful. They are quite remarkable discoveries. It has made our life easier by the computer a few years ago. It is considered as the brains of the human beings. It has opened up new vistas. These can make any number of calculations, modes of particulars hypothetical situations can be produced & studied.

In business, businessmen can simply deal through internet with their client regarding quantity and quality of the materials they require and can satisfy their clients. They can also give advertisement of their company through internet to attract more customers towards it. In schools, children are given knowledge about software of computer like Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and for small kids games are available in PCs for their refreshment. Through computers, we can easily chat or give tenders, graphics to the person living in other parts of the world. We can also do e-commerce through computer by booking for the product & delivery is done at home. We can also come to know about new products and their prices through PC. Now, a days all the designers shows their talent of design through websites. We can also send picture on any topic to the person living in other parts of the world via email. We can now book railway tickets and airplane tickets with the help of internet. Thus it helps us to save time because initially people had to stand in long queues for booking which used to consume much time. Now, a days all the queries are solved with the help of video conferencing and tele-conferencing. In computer we have to only feed the data and it gives us the accurate result in a time not less than a second.

It has certain disadvantages too. It has created the problem of unemployment. It can be hard to move your business forward if your entire day is spent taking care of office work that requires little of your own thought, but plenty of your time.

This is just one reason that you may want to think about employing a word processing service. However, there are many other ways that you can utilize a word processing service. To help you get the most out of a word processing service here are three great ways to utilize a word processing service

What You Need to Understand About Modern Technology and You, and the Past By Pardon R K Gumbo

In one of my previous articles, I hinted that modern technology is somewhat becoming indistinguishable from magic, and that there are many people today who also share this view with me, it is not a new view; so much has already been said about it.

From the beginning of time, man has struggled to understand his environment, but without much success even today. Man found himself naked on earth against the harsh elements of nature. Cold weather made him aware of the need to clothe himself and make a fire to warm himself and build a shelter. A grumbling stomach made him realise he needed to look for food, thirsty made him look for water. So far so good, but then came a whole host of problems he could not explain. Thunder and lightning, disease and death. Gradually, however, some other men managed, in a small way, to control some of these diseases by strange ways and trickery. Their techniques could only be explained as magic. For thousands of years the belief in magic and witchcraft was very strong among the ancient communities. And even today nothing can eliminate it completely; there are still communities in some parts of the world who still practice it with varying degrees of success.

Religions came at a later stage, with Christianity trying to eliminate the belief in magic and witchcraft with a more coherent set of beliefs based on the concept of an Almighty God who is responsible for all things on earth since he is the creator. Other religions enhanced the beliefs in magic and witchcraft. And still other religions quickly merged with magic and witchcraft to the extent that they became indistinguishable. But still so many questions remained unanswered, so many issues still needed to be explained.

In an effort to answer most of the questions that could not be explained by religions and magic, science emerged and went through various stages of evolvement until it reached the stages it is today, the stages which are now merging modern digital technologies with ancient magic and witchcraft. So we can safely ask; is modern technology moving forwards or backwards? Are ancient magic and witchcraft the most advanced forms of science? And, by implication, is society and civilisation also sliding unconsciously backwards with technology? Is technology trying to get us back to where we were before? I have heard people talk about the Lost Civilisation.

There seems to be always more questions than answers.

Whatever the case may be, I suppose we have no control over it, let us therefore make the best of what is within our scope and forget the rest.

We are mere spectators and users of technologies and evidence of this can be found if you CLICK HERE.

XP Wireless Access Point Management By Emma Mostrum

An XP wireless access point is like any other access point available. The main significance is this access point is being run on a system using Microsoft Windows XP as the operating system. Each time you attempt to log into a wireless network, you will likely see a list of several networks available to you. This will include secured networks as well as unsecured networks. You will not be able to log into the secured networks unless you have the network keys for these networks. However, you are able to log into any of the unsecured networks. This article will provide XP wireless access point management tips to prevent you from making mistakes when accessing wireless networks. These tips will also help to speed up your connections.

The ability to log onto unsecured wireless networks without a network keys or passwords can create problems. Specifically, because it is so easy to access these networks you may find yourself doing this more often than not. As a result these access points will be displayed in your list of preferred networks. Once an access point begins appearing in this location it often leads to you inadvertently selecting this network more often because it is prominently displayed at the top when you attempt to access a wireless network.

Fortunately managing your preferred networks is fairly simple. Start out by navigating to your wireless network connection dialogue box. Do this by clicking on start. Then click on connect to and select wireless network connection. This will open the wireless network connection dialogue box. One the left hand panel of the dialogue box you will see an option that says, "Change the order of preferred networks." Clicking on this option opens the wireless network connections dialogue box. Click on the wireless networks tab. You will see a list of your preferred networks. You can scroll through this list to highlight your own wireless network and then select move up. Repeat this process until your home network is shown in the top position. Doing this will ensure your home network appears at the top of the list of available networks. It will also minimize the potential for clicking on and logging into the wrong network.

You can also do a few other management related tasks through the wireless network connection properties dialogue box. One of the important things you can do through this dialogue box is control whether or not your computer will automatically connect to this network when it is in range. In most cases you do not want to do this because it can put you at risk of being hacked when you do not even realize you are connected to a network. In order to disable this feature, select one of the preferred networks listed on the wireless networks tab. Once this network is highlighted, select the properties button. This will open the properties dialogue box for the selected network. Select the connection tab at the top of the dialogue box. If there is a check mark in front of, "Connect when this network is in range," remove the check mark to avoid this problem.

computer

computer
A programmable machine. The two principal characteristics of a computer are:
  • It responds to a specific set of instructions in a well-defined manner.
  • Modern computers are electronic and digital. The actual machinery -- wires, transistors, and circuits -- is called hardware; the instructions and data are called software.

All general-purpose computers require the following hardware components:

  • memory : Enables a computer to store, at least temporarily, data and programs.
  • mass storage device : Allows a computer to permanently retain large amounts of data. Common mass storage devices include disk drives and tape drives.
  • input device : Usually a keyboard and mouse, the input device is the conduit through which data and instructions enter a computer.
  • output device : A display screen, printer, or other device that lets you see what the computer has accomplished.
  • central processing unit (CPU): The heart of the computer, this is the component that actually executes instructions.
  • In addition to these components, many others make it possible for the basic components to work together efficiently. For example, every computer requires a bus that transmits data from one part of the computer to another.

Computers can be generally classified by size and power as follows, though there is considerable overlap:

  • personal computer : A small, single-user computer based on a microprocessor. In addition to the microprocessor, a personal computer has a keyboard for entering data, a monitor for displaying information, and a storage device for saving data.
  • workstation : A powerful, single-user computer. A workstation is like a personal computer, but it has a more powerful microprocessor and a higher-quality monitor.
  • minicomputer : A multi-user computer capable of supporting from 10 to hundreds of users simultaneously.
  • mainframe : A powerful multi-user computer capable of supporting many hundreds or thousands of users simultaneously.
  • supercomputer : An extremely fast computer that can perform hundreds of millions of instructions per second.

After I finish crying—some people really know how to hurt a guy—I respond that, yes, computers play a role in crossword design these days. There are three parts to constructing a crossword: coming up with a theme, filling in the grid, and writing the clues. Until artificial intelligence makes some serious leaps, humans will do the heavy lifting when it comes to theme creation and clue writing. But the second part, filling grids with words, is quite computer-friendly. It's here that machines have revolutionized the construction of crossword puzzles.

Early efforts in computer-aided crossword design spat out marginal little grids filled with obscure words. But in the late 1980s, Boston computer programmer Eric Albert had an insight while tangling with this problem: A computer could generate high-quality crossword puzzles if each entry in its word database were ranked on, say, a scale from one to 10. An excellent puzzle word like JUKEBOX (gotta love all those high-scoring Scrabble letters) might be worth a nine or 10, while a hacky obscurity like UNAU (a type of sloth that has appeared in crosswords more times than it's been spotted in real life) would be a one or a two. By ranking the words, the junk would be left out and just the good stuff would go in.

This is how computer-aided crossword design still works today. The database operator has to place theme entries and black squares logically in the grid; this placement is done intuitively, based on what the human thinks the computer can handle. After the computer fills in the blanks, the human operator will likely do some further tweaking, such as marking off a corner of the grid he doesn't like so the computer can take another shot at it.
